A few predictions for 2029.

Energy and Environment

With unprecedented increase in global warming, reluctance of people to change12, let alone understand and acknowledge global warming and environmental change and many anti-intellectual, anti-science government policies3, scientists will be the one stepping up to the challenge of global warming and will have built many experimental nuclear reactors but the economic efficiency of the reactors will not be viable4.

Communication and Connectivity

All the world will be connected to the internet. With the combination of satellites, flying drones and balloons, towers and fibers, the world will have connectivity all around the world. The GSM industry and internet industry will merge, routing almost all the information through packet-switched internet. The use of VoIP will increase and so will the number of internet users. Anyone not connected to the internet will be volunteer digital nomads.

Education and Personal Enhancement

Educational institutes will be the accreditation institutes instead of the teaching institutes. They will test the participants and provide certificates. The value of certificates will decrease for most common degrees which do not require high cognitive power. The value of certificates will be limited to highly technical subjects like engineering and science.

Future tests will not be memory-based. Instead, they will be skill and knowledge-based. One knowing certain things will only add some credentials. Projects and experience will play a major role in determining the credentials of the person, more than the certificates.

Online platforms will provide an integrated, personalized and tailored education system that will provide instant feedback system to the learners so that the learners can learn at their own pace. The classrooms will be virtualized so that all the students can attend classes from their own home. Commute time will be reduced and so will the personal touch, which will be on special occasions like festivals.

Human-Computer Interaction

AR, Holograms will be common. Direct brain interaction devices will be available in the general market5.

Health Care

Integrated smart care technologies will be common. Small capsules to track our digestive systems, diodes to track our health. Many chips will be embedded in our body to track different things. All the data collected will be stored on our smartphone.

Hospitals will be modernized with advanced technologies like instant x-ray, scans, etc. Diagnosis will be done by the doctors with their AI assistant counterparts.

Governance and Security

Government surveillance will increase6 and so will the protests against it 7. Criminals will have a hard time getting away from the law. There will be debates on misuse of the surveillance to single out minorities. The biggest danger to the individuals will not come from foreign terrorist, shooters, and enemy nations. Their own politicians will be their worst enemies.

The election will be digitized and closely scrutinized using experts in the field. Blockchain and cryptography will make the election a robust process. The number of voting will increase dramatically as the cost of votings gets dramatically reduced. The public will vote more but if the public will understand the implications of their vote and really care about it will depend on the economic and social status of the voters.

Business Activities and Transactions

Paper money will only be at banks. All the transactions will be online. Centralized cryptocurrency will emerge8 and become successful at it due to its convenience but also lose its glare as the implications of it become clear91011 and governments start protesting1213.

Paper money and bitcoins will still be in circulation and be used by people who want complete anonymity. Bitcoin and similar decentralized cryptocurrencies will slowly start overtaking centralized solutions and will directly impact the global economy. This will be a direct threat over the power of governments and governments will try to resist it but will fail.

Materials, Industries, and Production

Production of materials will be even cheaper, with more industries automation. Price of decent materials will be affordable. Innovation will be incremental.

Travel and Entertainment

Travel and entertainment will expand its horizon with AR and VR technologies. Most people will be able to afford travel as travel becomes cheaper. However many will choose not to and take AR/VR experience due to reasons like reducing carbon footprint14, crowdedness of the destination, lack of value in traveling physically, lack of enough budget, etc.

Food, Cloth, and Shelter

More than 30% of the food will be cultured15. Progress in genetics, technology and the lack of enough production will push people to use artificial foods. Startups to build more healthy food will emerge. With a better understanding of our nutrients requirements, our artificial foods will be as much nutritious, if not more, than the food produced from traditional method1617.

The traditional method of farming will be modernized with hydroponic farming, vertical farming and new seeds that give better yield.

Accessibility

Every place will be accessible. With many tech enhancements to remove disabilities and the government requirements to make every place accessible, ten years is already a large amount of time to make every place of earth accessible.

Some examples of accessibility prosthetics will be the use of human-brain interfaces, prosthetic limbs, use of artificial eyes that directly interacts with the visual cortex of brain18.

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality will be more integrated with every possible tech piece. Smartphones, TVs, Monitors, Headsets, and whatnots. Every person will be using some kind of AR technology in their daily life. Screens will become less available in the market and eventually replaced in the 2030s.
